My backyard used to be an auto shop. The only plants that grow are weeds. Can you recommend ground cover?

you should start a pot plantation
you may have to excavate some of the soil and replace it with fresh dirt. the dirt that is there may be soaked with oil and other car fluids.
try and laying down some black earth and getting some lawn fertilizer
