they have a house which could accomidate our 100 guests (5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms)
they also have a proportianal back yard so, has anyone ever landscaped a large area for something like a wedding?
would 5 thousand dollars get eaten up into landscaping too easily?

Decorate around edges only. You can do decorative paths in central area to suit entertaining. This will also give a feeling of more space. Make sure that Clothes Line is moved out of sight.A lot of people are building Pergolas with Cloths line as top of Pergola.Best wishes on your wedding.
Depending on who’s doing the work, it could definitely eat up $5K in a hurry. However, if you do at least some of the work yourself, you could have a very good looking backyard for $5K.
I’d start with some general spruceup work and a soil test, liming and fertilization for the grass. Big pots and planters of colorful annuals are relatively inexpensive and add a lot of color to an area that’s pretty plain. If you’ve got a couple of years lead time, you could do something like a rose arbor.
One thing you’re going to need to consider: tables, chairs, canopy for those guests + the caterers. Rental may be a significant cost there. And you’ll need to help figure out parking for everyone… are the neighbors nice? Can at least some of your guests park several blocks away and walk in? Do you need valet parking?
Depends, do you intend to DIY? As materials go 5k will get you pretty far. But its labor that will suck up your budget. Given the season it shouldnt be that difficult to do this nicely. To begin, take a look at the backyard, what kind of landscape (if any) do they have now? Then start answering some questions.
1.How long do you have to do this?
2.Where will all the people sit?
3.Where are you and the groom going to stand?
4.Are their any large objects (trees, fountains, bushes) in the way? Can they be moved?
5.Is the backyard fenced? If not would the neighbors mind if you used some of their property?
6.Set up some chairs and measure the space it takes, my suggestion put a row of five chairs across by ten chairs deep on each side of the aisle.
7.Put up an arching trellis for you and the groom to stand under, and plant a fast growing flowering vine on both sides of the trellis, in pots if it’s not going to be permanent.
8. Create pathways for people to walk on, lay gravel in about a 24” swath to define where to walk for your guests. Use small landscaping bricks to define the edges of the paths (Google Holland stone).
9.Green and flowering always creates an appearance of lush growth. Go big, but put large plants in corners, plant flower beds next to the paths, and use medium sized bushes to place along the walls
10. Bring the inside out, have any large house plants you can bring out for the occasion? Have any friends that do?
11. Need grass quick? Consider astro turf, comes on rolls usually, it’s not that expensive and would look good under the chairs.
All in all, it depends on what you want, what’s already there, and whether you do-it-yourself or hire out. 5k goes a long way for DIY.
5k is not a lot but it could be done. I assume you are looking for some plantings of perennials and shrubs to dress up the yard. You could do the work yourself but I would recommend having a professionally designed plan. I can always tell if the home owner designed it or not
