socali asked:
I have a slope in my backyard, and I’m paying a landscaper to come dig and cut back the slope a few feet, then build a retaining wall then replant the slope with ground cover. Some people have said to keep the receipts as this is a tax write-off for home improvement. Is this true???

Unless the property is used for business and the expense relates to your business (such as a day care center), you cannot “write off” this expense.
You should still save your receipts because this improvement would increase your basis in your home.
If you do have a business and have a qualified home office, you might be able to deduct this expense, but only the business percentage.
For most home businesses, landscaping of your home is not a valid business expense.
If it increases the Fair Market Value of your home by more than the cost of your improvements, you would have no deduction.
No, it’s not a deduction for that year on your personal home. But keep the receipts for when you sell - if you owe any tax then, you can add it to your basis which will decrease the tax.
Mark S is right on, it would increase your basis in the house, but probably would be immaterial because you are exempt from tax from capital gains on the sale of your principal residence less than 250k (500k for marrieds).
Of course there are also a few rules about what is considered your principal residence but most people meet the criteria.
