How can I improve my landscaping drainage?

backyard landscaping
Oatmeal2348 asked:

I have a spot in the backyard, next to mypatio, that has been washed bare because water pools there, but doesn’t drain.
I heard that I might be able to cover the area with dirt (and grass seed) to elevate the base. Will this work?

Yes, you can elevate the grade of that area and lay sod or seed it but you might also create a different spot somewhere else. Are there existing drains elsewhere that someone could tap into to help that area? Also consider bordering the bad spot and filling with river rock or crushed granite. This makes an attractive area where you can place outdoor pottery, chiminea, statuette, or large moss rock for ornamentation. Large random flagstone pieces with river rock or dwarf mondo grass in between will also look very distinctive and planned out.

yes it will but i agree with the previous poster, that will only create another spot that doesnt drain. the best bet would be relevel the backyard completely with dirt, depending on ur yard it might be expensive but if its about about 500 sp. ft. then it shouldnt cost more than the amount of dirt needed which is about $50-$100, you need to level it in the middle but have it slope downward at the sides and back so the water will drain outward. if your yard is way bigger or thats too expensive then do what the previous commenter said, and thats ur best bet

you can elevate it but i think installing a french drain would help alleviate your problem. you can do it yourself and it is relatively inexpensive. the only thing is if there is somewhere on the edge of your property the water can go

If you add dirt to elevate the base, you may solve the problem in that one little area but you might create a new problem elsewhere. If you raise the spot by your patio, will the water be able to drain away or will it just find a new low spot to pool?

You need to make sure that the water can actually drain away. It either has to be absorbed into the ground or it has to travel off the property.

You can install a french drain, or put in a drain collector tied to a drainage system that allows the water to discharge off the property. If the water comes from gutter downspouts, you can have the downspouts tied in to a drainage system.

If you need further help, you can ask for an estimate from a licensed contractor, and they will often tell you how they plan to solve the problem. Check online or in your phone book under Drainage or Landscape drainage.
