i just bought a house and my back yard needs landscaping badly. it is barren with weeds. where do i begin? i think seeding is the way to go…laying turf is just too expensive. thanks.

true, sod is expensive, but a lot less of a hassle. with seeding, you have to rototill the dirt, add amendments, get it level, add the fertilizer, get the right seeds, spread them uniformly, etc, etc…..and that’s just the basics. i would actually try to focus on using shrubs that grow big fast. ie. Carpenteria, Xylosma, Photinia, etc. (that is, if those shrubs grow in your area…if not, there’s plenty others). :)

For the next couple of months, you should concentrate on removing the weeds and digging in (or rototilling in) as much compost as you can to prepare the soil.

The fall is the best time to plant: lawn (seed or sod), perennials, trees, etc. Talk to a REAL nursery (NOT Home Depot, etc.). They can give you ideas for your area (you don’t say where you live!!)

    Good Luck!!
