I would suggest hiring a landscaper unless you’d like to do it yourself. Check out your local plant nurseries. Usually the staff can give you suggestions on plant choices, hardscapes, garden art etc. Some will even do a yard design for you and provide you with a shopping list of everything you need to buy. Check to see if your area has public gardens that may offer courses to help you learn how to do it yourself. Public gardens also usually have native plants you can see as well as what varieties grow best in your area. Good luck!
We’re in the same boat. We bought a house a year ago. It was a repo and the realtor let the yard completely die.
We started by spending countless hours (okay, not really countless!) at Barnes & Noble reading landscaping books. I sketched out a design I liked and we moved on from there. The first thing to do is check, add or replace your sprinkling system. (We’re in that stage right now!) From there, add walkways, walls, or other larger structures. Last, plant.
If you hire a professional or do it yourself, it’s going to be expensive no matter what! I’ve found that pretty much every project tends to be $2-300. So, you can only imagine what a landscaper will cost. It is a lot of hard work though. Depends on the route you want to take!
I don’t know what area of the US you’re in, but I’ll still suggest this company when it comes to actually plants. I love them because they are a xeriscaping company and we’re in a low moisture/cold zone.

Fish ponds are always nice, they are soothing and it’s fun to feed the fish.

Hope this helps!
