Help! Long downward slope in my backyard?

backyard landscaping
Elliott Ness asked:

I have about a 100 foot downward slope for a backyard at my new house. No landscaping of any kind. I am looking for ideas to make this a good, usable space for my family on a limited budget (we are a little house poor, the house itself is great).

The only way to make this space usable at all would be to terrace it, and you’d have to hire someone to do such a large project. You’ll also have to make sure you don’t adversely affect the existing drainage on the property. That sounds like a huge slope, and not something a homeowner could reasonably expect to improve.

I agree with 65% water. Terracing is the only thing to do. That is a substantial project, and I would recommend a Landscape Architect take a look at it. The reason being, if you do anything to the site, and it impacts the drainage to your neighbors, you can be held liable. I understand your concern about cost, but the job must be done right. This is not going to be done cheaply. You may want to save your money and have it done right.
